On the final night of the regular season for Section V boys basketball teams, several Wayne-Finger Lakes squads were in action. Although all three W-FL league titles had been decided, there were several games of importance heading into postseason play next week.
The biggest game had Wayne visiting Newark in a rematch of a close contest in Ontario that the Eagles won on January 8th. Newark opened up a 28-12 lead in the second quarter behind hot shooting from Newark seniors Mason VanDeMortel and Jayden Peters. Wayne would make a run before the half to close the gap to 35-21. Wayne took the lead after the 3rd quarter, 46-44. But Mason VanDeMortel was too much for the East champion Eagles as Newark handed Wayne their first league loss of the season, 69-63.
Marcus Whitman completed a clean sweep of their league schedule, but it wasn’t as easy as the previous 15 FL West wins. The Wildcats escaped Harley-Allendale Columbia with a narrow 44-38 win. In Wayne County, Gananda defeated rival ER 73-59 to cap an outstanding regular season with a record of 18-2. Their only two defeats were at the hands of Wayne County league champion Lyons.
Full results from Thursday night’s regular season finale are below along with the final W-FL league standings…
