Hearing date set in Tohafjian rape case

Pretrial hearings are scheduled in the rape case of a Varick man who already has been convicted of killing two people.

During a brief proceeding Tuesday in Seneca County Court, Judge Daniel Doyle set a March 18 hearing date for Emerson “John” Tohafjian. He faces felony charges of first-degree rape and first-degree unlawful imprisonment for an incident that allegedly occurred last June in Fayette.

Tohafjian is accused of forcibly raping Lori McConnell, his ex-girlfriend at the time, threatening to kill her, and choking her. Tohafjian also is accused of throwing a cat carrier with a cat inside.

In addition, he faces misdemeanor charges of criminal obstruction of breathing, cruelty to animals, and criminal trespass.

Tohafjian pleaded not guilty to all of those charges in December.
