The young Mynderse Blue Devils have been struggling with just a pair of league wins heading into Newark on Friday night. They would be looking to avenge their 21 point loss at home to the Reds back on December 7th. With Newark coming off a big road win at Geneva on Tuesday, the Blue Devils would enter the game as heavy underdogs. Coach Korzeniewski’s Devils would open the game with staunch man-to-man defense, holding the bigger, more experienced Reds to just 4 points in the first quarter. They would hold a 9 point lead after three quarters of play before Newark opened the final quarter on a 9-0 run to tie the contest. Then junior guard Griffin Herron would score 5 straight points and sophomore Jared King would hit 5 of 6 free throws to secure the Mynderse win, beating the Reds in their home gymnasium for the second straight season.
Meanwhile, in Seneca Falls, Coach Jerry Anderson’s Lady Blue Devils looked to have their game against the Lady Reds in hand until Isabella Santell buried a three pointer with 5 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Nobody would score in the first overtime period and with Mynderse trailing by 1 at the end of the second overtime period, Madison Barnett would find the ball in her hands with 3.4 seconds left…

Also on Friday night, the Gananda Lady Blue Panthers would square off against Marion. Both teams were tied at the top of the Wayne County standings but Gananda would move alone to the top of the league leaderboard with a 42-27 victory. In other Wayne County girls action, East Rochester defeated Lyons and Red Creek’s super-sophomore Izzy Wilbur exploded for 47 points in the Lady Rams win over Rochester Prep.
Finally, congratulations to Naples senior Autumn Kunes who joined the 1,000 point club on Friday night…
