Waterloo man charged with damaging hotel, taking car in Auburn

A Waterloo man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly causing thousands of dollars in damage to an elevator door, then taking someone’s car from their home.

The Auburn Police Department reported Thursday that Robert Louis Barnes, Jr., 23, of 97 Stark St., Waterloo, had a warrant out for his arrest and turned himself in Wednesday. The warrant was issued Dec. 19 for an October incident.

Just before 1 a.m. Oct. 27, Barnes repetitively kicked an elevator door at Auburn’s Hilton Garden Inn, located at 74 State St, police said. The damage he caused reportedly cost $5,200 to fix. Although not caught at the time, hotel surveillance video was checked and a warrant for arrest was issued when Barnes was identified.

Barnes was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony, for the incident. When the damage is more than $1,500, the charge becomes a felony rather than a misdemeanor.

Barnes was also charged with third-degree unauthorized use of vehicle, a class A misdemeanor, for an event that occurred later that day.
