Free lead abatement supervisor training set for Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in Cayuga County

Cayuga County is offering a free four-day Lead Abatement Supervisor course Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 for people seeking to supervise professional lead-removal projects.

The county Health Department announced the training Friday as it prepares for increased demand for certified contractors under New York’s Lead Rental Registry.

Space is limited. To register or ask about the course, call 315-253-1560 or email LeadSafeHomes@cayugacounty.gov. The department says registration must be confirmed directly with its Lead Rental Registry team.

The county announcement says participants must have one year of experience as a certified lead-based paint abatement worker or two years of experience in a related field. The county’s course page also notes that EPA experience, application, certification and examination requirements apply.

The department is inviting general contractors, maintenance workers, HVAC workers, painters, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, window installers, roofers and others interested in lead-abatement work to consider the course.

According to the county’s announcement, an EPA-certified supervisor must be present during preparation and final cleanup of an abatement project and available to reach the site within two hours during the work.

The department said the state’s Lead Rental Registry requirements are in effect for the 13021 ZIP code, requiring rental inspections for lead hazards. It expects those requirements to increase the need for certified abatement contractors.

The November course is separate from the two-day Lead Abatement Worker training offered in October. The county has not listed the supervisor class’s daily hours or training location in this announcement; prospective participants can confirm those details when registering.
