New York State Parks is accepting applications through Dec. 31 for seasonal park ranger positions that help visitors and respond to problems at state parks and historic sites.
The recruitment campaign seeks applicants for jobs generally running from mid-May through Labor Day, with longer seasons available at selected locations, according to the state parks announcement.
Rangers assist visitors and respond to emergencies
Park rangers serve as ambassadors and provide security services. They are not sworn law enforcement officers and do not have police or peace officer status.
Their work includes patrolling trails, beaches and campgrounds; answering visitors' questions; and helping maintain a safe environment. Rangers may patrol on foot or use vehicles, utility terrain vehicles or bicycles, depending on their assignment.
Rangers respond to reports of medical emergencies, missing people and property problems, alerting appropriate emergency personnel when needed. They also help manage traffic and assist during major park events.
Assignments can include maintenance-related duties as well as visitor assistance. The agency is seeking people interested in public service and working outdoors during the busy summer season.
Applications due Dec. 31
Job information and application materials are available on the park ranger employment page. Applicants should review the requirements and available work locations before applying.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites and other facilities. The system draws about 86 million visits annually, according to the agency.
