The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps will host a guided birding walk Nov. 14 along the lake's West Shore Trail, offering a look at migrating waterfowl, songbirds and birds of prey in restored habitat.
The 10 a.m. program will be led by corps volunteers and master naturalists Mary Harkola and CJ Harkola, according to an Audubon announcement. Online registration is required, and space is limited.
Two-mile walk starts at visitors center
Participants will meet at the DEC Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, 270 Restoration Way, Syracuse. The two-mile route follows a paved trail with a gentle slope. Binoculars and field guides will be available.
The program will cover identification of birds and other wildlife, along with the role of forest and wetland conservation in the Onondaga Lake watershed.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Questions can be directed to the Montezuma Audubon Center at 315-365-3588 or montezuma@audubon.org.
Honeywell, Parsons and Anchor QEA sponsor the event.
Corps supports restoration and stewardship
Founded in 2012, the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps involves community volunteers in projects that create or improve wildlife habitat and sustain the lake's value as an Important Bird Area.
Honeywell founded the corps in partnership with the Montezuma Audubon Center and Onondaga Audubon. It is now a National Audubon Society program. Additional supporters include National Grid and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
