Auburn OTB closure delayed until Dec. 31; relocation aid proposed

Auburn’s off-track betting branch will remain open through Dec. 31 under a revised Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. plan that also proposes financial help for affected workers.

The corporation’s board approved the updated proposal Oct. 29, extending operations two months beyond the original Oct. 31 closing date. Employees will continue receiving wages and contractual benefits through year’s end.

Retirement-eligible workers would be offered severance equal to three months of annualized base pay. Auburn and Jamestown employees who accept jobs with the corporation in Batavia could receive up to $10,000 for documented moving and temporary housing expenses.

The benefits are part of negotiations with the United Public Service Employees Union.

The six affected branches generated about $660,000 in losses through August, roughly 30% more than during the same period in 2025, according to the corporation.

President and CEO Byron Brown said the extension gives employees and their families more time to prepare while bargaining continues.

The Marway branch in Gates and Wehrle branch in Williamsville will remain open.
