Bat Week program includes an after-dark walk

Creatures of the Night is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29, during Bat Week, the international bat conservation observance held Oct. 24-31.

An indoor presentation will cover the ecology, habitat and identification of New York’s bats. Participants will then head outside after dark for a guided walk to look for bat activity around the center.

The outdoor portion is approximately three-quarters of a mile. The program will take place rain or shine, and participants should dress for the weather and insects. A bat-themed craft will be available before the presentation.

Cornell Raptor Program joins owl evening

On Friday, Oct. 30, the center will partner with the Cornell Raptor Program for an indoor presentation featuring a live owl. The program will explore owl adaptations, behavior and conservation needs.

A guided twilight walk will follow, giving participants an opportunity to listen for resident owls in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. Guests should bring flashlights and dress warmly. An owl-themed craft will be available beforehand.

The center’s marked trails have mowed grass and stone dust surfaces, occasional wildlife-created holes and several inclines. Accessible restrooms and water fountains are available inside.
