Clyde-Savannah's girls volleyball program donated $2,210 to Upstate University Hospital through its annual Sets for Survivors game and fundraising efforts throughout the season.
The team presented the check when Clyde-Savannah hosted Palmyra-Macedon on Oct. 19, according to a news release. Clyde-Savannah won the first three sets of the match.
Sets for Survivors recognizes people affected by breast cancer. Each year, players from all three levels of Clyde-Savannah's volleyball program — modified, junior varsity and varsity — work together to choose a hospital or health care setting that treats people with breast cancer.
Varsity coach Allison Denk said Upstate was selected because a varsity player had a close family member who was treated there.
“The team wanted to recognize the nurses and staff at Upstate who work hard every day to make patients feel welcome and cared for,” Denk said.
“As a team, we wanted to show our support for anyone who is battling,” said Larissa Walters, a senior and varsity team captain. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to make a positive impact and support such an important cause.”
Concessions, donations and raffles
The teams raised money through concession sales during the season and appeals to local businesses. Businesses contributed cash, gift cards and raffle baskets to support the effort.
The gift cards and baskets were raffled off at the conclusion of the game, with all proceeds going to Upstate University Hospital.
Involving all three teams increases the donations received each year, according to the release.
The community service effort supports Denk’s goal of building a united volleyball program, with all three levels taking part as postseason play approaches.
