Steuben County will participate in a statewide STOP-DWI Halloween enforcement effort from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, according to the county Sheriff's Office.
The impaired-driving campaign covers Halloween weekend, when the agency is urging drivers to arrange a sober ride and watch for pedestrians out after dark.
The sheriff's office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are promoting the message “Drive Sober this Halloween.” The county announced its participation Monday, Oct. 26.
Drivers heading to Halloween parties should designate a sober driver, use a taxi or rideshare service, or stay overnight, the notice says. It also encourages friends to take the keys from someone who is about to drive after drinking and help arrange another way home.
The notice urges drivers to look out for children trick-or-treating and other pedestrians. It also cautions that alcohol can leave people on foot less aware of nearby traffic.
More information about impaired-driving prevention is available from NHTSA.
