Cornell University's College of Arts & Sciences will offer a new career-development course for 100 first- and second-year students in spring 2027, with applications due Nov. 17.
The college says Career BRIDGE will combine classroom work with a spring-break trip to New York City to meet alumni and potential employers. An information session is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27, with registration through Handshake.
The first class will offer tracks in finance, writing careers and social impact/government. Jennifer Maclaughlin, director of Arts & Sciences Career Development, said the tracks will change and expand in future years.
BRIDGE stands for Building Readiness, Insight, Direction, Growth, & Experience. The course will examine work through labor-market data, organizational structures, social psychology and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Students will use research, self-assessment tools and experiential learning to develop career-readiness strategies. Maclaughlin said the class is intended to address skills that students may not otherwise learn in the classroom, including making professional connections and planning around their interests and abilities.
Maclaughlin will teach the course with Meghan Kilfeather, assistant director for employer and academic engagement in A&S Career Development. A gift from Jim and Amy Dieterich, parents of a student in the class of 2028, made the course possible.
The college is also expanding Kilfeather's work with employers. She will maintain and develop recruitment partnerships, advise students and hold workshops on career topics.
Students can find the application through Cornell's Career BRIDGE opportunity page.
