Unattended campfire sparks Rock Pond fire, DEC says

A fire that began as an unattended campfire at Rock Pond in Harrietstown was contained by forest rangers Oct. 8, the DEC said.

Two rangers responded at 4:43 p.m. and contained the Franklin County fire by 8:30 p.m., according to the Department of Environmental Conservation’s report, released Thursday.

The DEC reminded campers to remain with fires and thoroughly extinguish them before leaving. Its guidance calls for drowning the fire with water, wetting all embers and coals, then stirring the water through the remains so the ground is wet as well.

The department’s campfire safety guidance includes additional preparation and extinguishing steps.
