William Smith women’s soccer extended its win streak to six games Saturday, defeating No. 8 Vassar 2-1 in a Liberty League matchup at Cozzens Field. The Herons improved to 10-3-0 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 6-0-0, while the Brewers suffered their first loss, falling to 7-1-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the Liberty League.
Syracuse football plagued by second-half turnovers in home loss to Louisville (full coverage) Kristin Middaugh and Aleena Solano provided the offense for William Smith, scoring just 27 seconds apart during the first half to establish an early two-goal advantage.
Middaugh opened the scoring in the 18th minute, converting a pass from Addison Stockwin into her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Solano quickly doubled the lead, connecting on a shot from 30 yards out following a combination with Grace Metzler. The goal marked Solano’s second of the season.
Vassar responded later in the opening half when Elena Valle converted a free kick to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Brewers continued applying pressure after halftime, but William Smith goalkeeper Antonia Goerke delivered several key stops to preserve the advantage.
Goerke finished with seven saves across 90 minutes, including multiple second-half stops that prevented Vassar from finding the equalizer.
The Brewers held a 19-11 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Vassar also earned seven corner kicks compared to William Smith’s one.
The Herons return to action Wednesday, October 21, hosting St. Lawrence in another Liberty League matchup at Cozzens Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
