No. 11 Hobart soccer settled for a 1-1 draw against Vassar on Saturday in a Liberty League matchup at Gordon Field. The Statesmen moved to 10-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play, while the Brewers improved to 4-5-4 overall and 2-1-3 in the Liberty League.
Noah Fischer scored Hobart’s lone goal, while goalkeeper Jake Hans delivered five saves to help the Statesmen secure the draw.
Vassar threatened early, forcing Hans into action just over a minute into the contest. The Hobart goalkeeper made another key stop in the 13th minute, turning away a shot from Clem Grossman.
The Brewers eventually broke through in the 30th minute when Joshua Lee collected a pass from Grossman and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Hobart responded just 84 seconds later as Fischer headed home a cross from Quinn Phillips to even the score at one. The goal marked Fischer’s first of the season.
Neither team managed to break the deadlock in the second half despite several scoring opportunities.
Syracuse football plagued by second-half turnovers in home loss to Louisville (full coverage) Brady Leitner nearly gave Hobart the lead in the 63rd minute, but his shot narrowly missed the left goalpost. Thomas Coughlin also threatened in the 75th minute, sending an attempt over the crossbar.
Hans preserved the tie with another important save in the 79th minute, denying Alejandro Martinez from close range.
Vassar finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots, while Hobart held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Statesmen return to action Saturday, October 24, hosting Union at Cozzens Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
