Branchport pair charged in theft from hospitalized Penn Yan-area man

Two Branchport residents were arrested Friday on warrants in an investigation into money taken from a hospitalized 75-year-old Penn Yan-area man's accounts, according to the Yates County Sheriff's Office.

David Flansburg, 44, and Angela Vasquez, 31, both of County House Road, face felony larceny, conspiracy and forged-instrument charges following an investigation that began Aug. 22.

A family member contacted deputies that day to report that money had been taken from the man's financial accounts without his knowledge or permission.

The man, who had been hospitalized for an extended period during the time investigators examined, told investigators he had not written or signed several checks drawn on his accounts at two local financial institutions.

Investigators said checks bearing the man's purported signature were cashed locally and that Flansburg and Vasquez used some of the proceeds for personal purchases.

The sheriff's office said Flansburg was charged with one count of third-degree grand larceny, six counts of fourth-degree conspiracy and six counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Vasquez was charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny, six counts of fourth-degree conspiracy, nine felony counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument and one count of petit larceny, deputies said.

The arrests took place Oct. 16 under a warrant stemming from the ongoing investigation, which is being handled by Investigator Brad Cole with assistance from Lt. Kevin Campbell, Sgt. Derek Chisom and Deputy Sydney Spaulding.

Both defendants were scheduled to appear in centralized arraignment court, according to the sheriff's office.
