Gov. Kathy Hochul's office rejected a Department of Homeland Security claim that New York refused to hand over 16,000 undocumented immigrants accused or convicted of crimes during President Donald Trump's second administration, according to RochesterFirst.
Her office said the state always notifies federal immigration authorities when a noncitizen is serving a state prison sentence and disputed the federal characterization of New York's policies.
DHS said 52,503 crimes and convictions were associated with the individuals it identified, a federal claim that does not mean every person in that group has been convicted.
Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin criticized the state's restrictions on local cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, including an August ban on 287(g) agreements that the county is challenging in court.
McLaughlin declined to answer when asked whether the county had complied with an order to stop working with ICE, the station reported.
