Syracuse women’s soccer came up short Thursday night in Raleigh, North Carolina, falling 1-0 to NC State despite five saves from junior goalkeeper Maya Naimoli.
The Orange dropped to 4-8-2 overall and 1-7-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Wolfpack improved to 10-3-2 and 3-3-2 in conference action.
After a scoreless first half, NC State broke through just over 10 minutes into the second period. Mana Nakata won possession and set up Antonella Mazziotto, who fired a shot from approximately 30 yards out to put the Wolfpack ahead. The strike proved to be the game’s only goal.
Syracuse nearly responded minutes later when junior midfielder Gabby Wisbeck delivered a pass to Farrah Stephens-Martin. The junior forward broke into the penalty area from the right side, but NC State goalkeeper Amor Leigh Martin Esteban denied her attempt at the 59:02 mark.
Naimoli kept the Orange within striking distance throughout the contest. Her five stops included four in the second half, highlighted by a save on Alex Mohr’s header early after the break and a late denial of Nakata’s attempt with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Naimoli entered the matchup leading the ACC in saves and added to that total against the Wolfpack.
NC State controlled much of the attacking play, finishing with a 21-5 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in attempts on goal. The Wolfpack also earned nine corner kicks, one more than Syracuse.
Seven Orange players completed all 90 minutes, while junior midfielder Anna Croyle made her 50th consecutive start for Syracuse.
The Orange will continue their road schedule Friday, October 23, with a matchup against Louisville.
