State Theatre of Ithaca names Lanny Brown executive director

The State Theatre of Ithaca has named Lanny Brown its executive director, effective Oct. 27, as the nonprofit venue prepares for its centennial in 2028.

Brown brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience, including work in organizational management, fundraising and facilities, according to a State Theatre announcement issued Monday. He is relocating to Ithaca with his wife.

Brown most recently served as assistant executive director of the Tennessee Bar Association, overseeing operations for the association and its charitable foundation. His earlier roles included vice president of mission delivery for Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee and curator of mammals at the Nashville Zoo.

Board co-chairs Suzanne Smith Jablonski and Jennifer Tavares said Brown's experience managing nonprofit organizations and facilities, and his interest in the theatre, stood out during the search. Brown said he looks forward to working with the board, staff, volunteers and supporters to strengthen the venue and welcome new audiences.

The State Theatre said Brown's priorities will include local partnerships, philanthropic support and care for the historic building. The theatre opened in 1928 and will mark its 100th anniversary in 2028.

State Theatre of Ithaca Inc. owns and operates the venue in downtown Ithaca. The nonprofit said more than 65,000 people are expected to attend events during its 2026-27 season.
