Syracuse man sentenced to 24½ years for assault that left victim with life-threatening injuries

A Syracuse man was sentenced Tuesday to 24½ years in state prison for a domestic violence assault that left the victim with life-threatening injuries, including the destruction of her spleen.

Anthony Crawford, 46, received the combined prison term before Cayuga County Court Judge Jon Budelmann, according to an Oct. 6 release from District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci's office.

Crawford was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

A jury found him guilty of first-degree assault, a Class B violent felony, and second-degree assault and second-degree strangulation, both Class D violent felonies, after a four-day trial.

The convictions stemmed from a Jan. 22, 2025, incident in which Crawford strangled and severely beat the victim, prosecutors said. FingerLakes1 previously reported on the jury's verdict in August, when sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 6.

Grome Antonacci said the attack came close to killing the victim and that the sentence holds Crawford accountable for the harm he caused. She said her office would prosecute domestic violence cases to the fullest extent of the law and expressed hope that the victim could continue healing.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Heather De Stefano and Assistant District Attorney Amanda Casselman handled the trial.
