Syracuse man convicted in Cayuga County assault, strangulation case

A Cayuga County jury convicted a Syracuse man Thursday of three violent felonies stemming from a January 2025 domestic assault that prosecutors said left the victim with a destroyed spleen.

Anthony Crawford, 46, was found guilty of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and second-degree strangulation after a four-day trial in Cayuga County Court, District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci's office said.

Prosecutors said Crawford strangled and severely beat the victim during the Jan. 22, 2025, incident. The jury of five men and seven women began deliberating at 10:16 a.m. and returned its verdict at 11:10 a.m.

Assistant district attorneys Heather De Stefano and Amanda Casselman prosecuted the case.

Crawford faces up to 25 years in prison on the first-degree assault conviction, a Class B violent felony. The other two convictions are Class D violent felonies.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6 before Cayuga County Court Judge Jon E. Budelmann.
