Ontario County seeks residents’ views on food waste through Oct. 26

Ontario County residents have until Oct. 26 to complete a survey about how they handle food scraps and which waste-diversion programs they might use, the county's Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management announced Friday.

The responses will inform an Organics Management Plan being prepared for the Board of Supervisors. The plan is intended to give supervisors data and recommendations before they decide whether to pursue new food-waste programs or policies.

What the plan will examine

Ontario County has hired MSW Consultants to estimate how much organic material different groups generate and assess existing processing capacity. The firm will also identify infrastructure gaps, compare handling technologies and consider opportunities to work with neighboring communities.

The planning process includes surveys, virtual meetings and workshops for different groups. The residential survey is available through the Ontario County Recycles website.

Carla Jordan, the department's director, said residents' answers about their current practices and willingness to participate in diversion programs will help guide the options the county considers. The survey is part of the county's continuing waste-reduction work, not an announcement that a specific collection program has been approved.

Residents can complete the survey by Oct. 26. For more information, the department lists 585-393-3090.
