Cayuga County residents can learn practical ways to protect water quality, reduce food waste and compost at home during a free workshop Saturday, Oct. 10, at Emerson Park.
The StormwaterSmart Workshop runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Island Shelter on Deauville Island, 6914 E. Lake Road, Auburn.
The interactive program will include a presentation on reducing household food waste, a hands-on activity about carbon footprints and a live demonstration of effective composting. Participants will also receive tips and tools they can put to use at home.
Registered Cayuga County residents can receive a free compost bin, limited to one per household. Other giveaways will also be available for registered participants.

Portions of the project were funded through a state Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Protection Fund grant to the Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance.
