William Smith volleyball picked up its 10th win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Cortland 3-1 on the road in a non-conference matchup.
The Herons improved to 10-2 with the victory, while Cortland dropped to 6-6.
First-year Cassidy Breuer led William Smith with 14 kills and added seven digs, while senior Maren Hunt delivered a season-high 11 kills. Junior Emily Fulton added 10 kills and 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Junior libero Kali Vanderhoof anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 23 digs. Delainy Williams also recorded a double-double, finishing with a season-best 40 assists and 12 digs.
William Smith totaled 47 kills compared with 41 for Cortland and held advantages in assists, 45-37, and digs, 78-69. The Herons also finished with 11 service aces.
The teams traded momentum throughout the opening set before William Smith closed on a 7-2 run to secure a 25-19 victory.
The Herons carried that momentum into the second set, recording 13 kills while limiting Cortland to seven. William Smith closed out the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead.
Cortland answered in the third, capitalizing on seven William Smith hitting errors to win 25-19 and extend the match.
The Red Dragons then rallied from an early deficit in the fourth set, but William Smith held on late. Vanderhoof delivered the final point with a service ace, sealing a 25-23 victory and the four-set win.
Arielle Newsome led the Herons with five blocks, while Senya Dorny and Fulton each contributed three service aces.
William Smith returns to Liberty League play Saturday, October 3, traveling to Clarkson for a 2 p.m. match in Potsdam, New York.
