Cornell men’s soccer turned a scoreless halftime deadlock into a convincing Ivy League victory on Saturday afternoon, scoring four times in the second half to defeat Harvard 4-1 at Berman Field.
The Big Red improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play with its third consecutive victory, while Harvard dropped to 1-5-1 and 0-1.
Adam Schaban opened the scoring in the 50th minute after Andrew Miles found him in the middle of the penalty area. Schaban finished with his right foot for his third goal of the season.
Schaban then set up Cornell’s second goal seven minutes later. He found Calvin Momanyi on the left side of the box, and Momanyi scored his first career goal with a one-time left-footed shot.
Harvard cut the deficit in half in the 64th minute when Andreas Savva’s attempt deflected off a Cornell defender and found the net. It proved to be Harvard’s only shot on goal.
Cornell answered four minutes later as Kasper Wollstein won possession near the top of the penalty area before beating Harvard goalkeeper Jason Broome with a right-footed finish.
Wollstein added another goal in the 84th minute, taking a lofted pass from Nate Hovan and sending a right-footed shot into the upper-right corner. Wollstein finished with five shots, including three on goal.
Cornell held a 13-6 advantage in shots and dominated the shots-on-goal category, 9-1. Filip Versterre played all 90 minutes in goal for the Big Red, while Broome made four saves.
The teams combined for just five shots during a scoreless first half, with Cornell holding a 4-1 edge.
Cornell begins Ivy League road play on Saturday, October 3, visiting Brown for a 1 p.m. matchup.
