Cornell women’s soccer opens Ivy League play with shutout win over Yale

Emily Gibbons scored less than a minute into the match Saturday afternoon, and Cornell women’s soccer made the early advantage hold up for a 1-0 victory over Yale at Berman Field in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

Gibbons converted a penalty kick just 54 seconds after kickoff after Yale was called for a handball inside the box. Her right-footed attempt found the bottom-right corner for her third goal of the season and the seventh-fastest goal in Cornell history.

The Big Red controlled much of the afternoon offensively, outshooting Yale 20-6 and holding a 13-2 advantage in shots after halftime. Yale goalkeeper Isabel Willems kept the Bulldogs within one by making six saves.

Andrea Wilson led Cornell with five shots, including two on target, while Gibbons added four attempts. Sofia Menéndez, Alanna Colbert and Jessica Alessi also forced saves from Willems.

While Cornell continued to pressure Yale, its defense prevented the Bulldogs from finding an equalizer. Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Kerrigan made two saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. The total ties her for the third-most clean sheets by a freshman goalkeeper in program history.

Kerrigan stopped JoJo DeNegri late in the first half before denying Hope McMillin in the 78th minute. McMillin’s attempt was Yale’s only shot on target after halftime, while leading scorer Anita Thorvaldsdottir was held without a shot.

Cornell improved to 4-3-2 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play, earning its first Ivy League-opening victory since 2021. Yale dropped to 5-5-0 and 0-1.
