Syracuse men’s soccer added another ranked victory to its season Friday, earning a 1-0 road upset over No. 10 Notre Dame to improve to 7-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
After a scoreless first half, the Orange finally broke through in the 71st minute. Ivan Irinimbabazi finished a chance created by Chimere Omeze and Sachiel Ming, with the scoring sequence beginning from a Syracuse corner kick.
The goal gave Syracuse the only lead it needed as the Orange defense protected the advantage over the final 19 minutes.
Goalkeeper Juan Martinez-Bastidas helped preserve the shutout, making one save as Syracuse held Notre Dame without a goal. The Fighting Irish finished with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal, but the Orange defense prevented Notre Dame from turning those opportunities into the equalizer.
The victory marks Syracuse’s second win over a ranked opponent this season. The Orange previously defeated then-No. 24 Connecticut 2-1 in their season opener.
Notre Dame entered Thursday’s match with a 5-2-2 record before Syracuse handed the Fighting Irish their third loss of the season.
Syracuse will return home Friday, October 2, when it continues ACC play against Pittsburgh at SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
