New York State Police are warning residents to be wary of scams that pressure victims into withdrawing cash, handing money to couriers or providing personal and financial information.
The warning issued Thursday by State Police said scammers often rely on fear, urgency or false claims to convince people to act before they have time to verify what they are being told.
Police said legitimate government agencies and organizations will not instruct people to withdraw large amounts of cash or arrange an in-person cash exchange with a courier.
Residents should also be suspicious of anyone demanding immediate action, asking for photographs of cash or requesting sensitive personal or financial information.
State Police urged people who receive suspicious calls, messages or alerts to independently verify the claims before doing anything with their money.
They also recommended speaking with a trusted family member, friend or law enforcement agency before withdrawing or sending money.
The warning specifically encourages New Yorkers to discuss common scams with elderly family members, neighbors and friends who may be particularly vulnerable to high-pressure tactics.
State Police said awareness and verification can help prevent residents from becoming victims.
