Tractor-trailer fire shuts I-86 westbound beneath Gibson Bridge

A tractor-trailer carrying trash caught fire beneath the Gibson Bridge on Interstate 86 westbound Wednesday night, forcing crews to close the highway and bridge while firefighters worked and state inspectors checked the structure.

The Corning Joint Fire District was dispatched at about 9:42 p.m. and found the tractor and trailer actively burning, according to the department.

Westbound traffic was shut down at Exit 47, and the Gibson Bridge was temporarily closed as responders evaluated possible hazards.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control before beginning an extensive overhaul to extinguish fire and hot spots buried in the trailer's contents.

Gang Mills and Big Flats fire departments supplied tankers, while the Corning City Fire Department provided additional foam.

The state Department of Transportation inspected the Gibson Bridge and determined it was safe for travel.

B&W Towing removed the vehicle and remaining debris after the response.

New York State Police, the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, Steuben County Emergency Services and Corning police also assisted.

The fire district's statement did not identify a cause or report whether anyone was injured.
