New York State Police issued 11,201 tickets and arrested 253 people for driving while intoxicated during a four-day Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign that also included hundreds of speeding, distracted driving and seat belt violations.
The special enforcement period ran from Sept. 4 through Sept. 7 and included sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols and targeted enforcement aimed at impaired and distracted driving, according to State Police.
Troopers also investigated 632 crashes during the campaign, including five fatal crashes.
Speeding accounted for 3,935 tickets statewide, while troopers issued 746 tickets for seat belt violations, 308 for distracted driving and 234 for violations of the state’s Move Over Law.
The overall number of tickets increased from the 2025 Labor Day enforcement campaign, when State Police issued 9,912 tickets and made 225 DWI arrests.
That represents an increase of 1,289 total tickets and 28 DWI arrests compared with last year’s campaign.
Finger Lakes troopers issue 1,000 tickets
Troop E, which covers the Finger Lakes region, issued 1,000 total tickets during the enforcement period.
Troopers in the region made 10 DWI arrests, issued 285 speeding tickets, 18 distracted driving tickets, 70 child restraint and seat belt tickets and 12 Move Over Law tickets.
Troop E also reported 36 Penal Law arrests during the four-day period.
The Finger Lakes total was slightly below several other regions. Troop T, which covers the New York State Thruway, recorded the highest total with 1,864 tickets, including 736 for speeding.
Western New York’s Troop A issued 1,211 tickets, while Troop K in the eastern Hudson Valley issued 1,164 and Troop G in the Capital Region issued 1,111.
Central New York’s Troop D issued 1,079 tickets, including 283 for speeding and 27 for distracted driving. Troopers there also made 31 DWI arrests and 95 Penal Law arrests.
DWI arrests highest in Hudson Valley regions
The largest number of DWI arrests came from Troops F and K, which each reported 42.
Troop F covers the western Hudson Valley, while Troop K serves the eastern Hudson Valley.
Troop T on the Thruway recorded 34 DWI arrests, followed by Troop D in Central New York with 31 and Troop G in the Capital Region with 25.
Long Island troopers made 24 DWI arrests, while Western New York recorded 17, the Southern Tier 12, the Finger Lakes 10, New York City nine and the North Country seven.
The campaign was partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
State Police said the enforcement effort focused on impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, aggressive driving, seat belt use and compliance with the Move Over Law.
