Cornell University professor Peter J. Katzenstein has received the American Political Science Association's James Madison Award for distinguished scholarly contributions to political science.
The association presents the award every three years to an American political scientist. Katzenstein is the Walter S. Carpenter Jr. Professor at Cornell's Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and a professor of government in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The award committee cited more than four decades of work spanning small states, the political economy of the Global North, national security, culture and identity.
Committee members said Katzenstein combines broad theory with detailed empirical work and has influenced multiple areas of the discipline.
The citation also recognized his work beyond published scholarship, including service as an editor, teacher and mentor. Katzenstein served as president of the association in 2008 and 2009.
The committee said he helped build academic subfields, opened established fields to new voices and shaped a generation of political scientists.
