Families interviewed at the New York State Fair cautiously supported using AI for research or guidance after students first attempt the work themselves.
Eighth-grader Simon Mammen said appropriate AI use depends on the assignment, but he would not use it to complete his math homework.
His brother Eli, who is entering ninth grade, said teachers can explain material in ways chatbots cannot.
The discussion comes as New York City moves to prohibit student-facing generative AI through eighth grade and New York State United Teachers calls for stronger oversight statewide.
