The first harmful algal blooms of the summer season have been confirmed on Seneca Lake, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association reported three confirmed blooms in the northeast and northwest portions of the lake and near Himrod in the southwest.
Officials said the lake is cooling from its summer peak and entering the traditional season when HABs become more common, particularly during periods of lighter wind.
Meanwhile, the lake level continues to fall as efforts to plug a leak near the Seneca Falls canal lock have been unsuccessful, with repairs not expected until November.
Pure Waters warned that without significant rainfall, Seneca Lake could fall below 444.5 feet before the end of October.
