Petit Jean State Park in Morrilton, Arkansas, has opened what state officials describe as the nation's first via ferrata in a state park, offering a guided climbing route designed for beginners and experienced climbers.
The route runs just under half a mile along sandstone cliffs beneath the Palisades Overlook and reaches about 100 feet above the ground. Climbers wear harnesses and remain clipped to a steel safety cable, with metal rungs installed along more difficult sections.
Each group is limited to five people. Participants must be at least 12 years old and complete a practice climb before starting the tour.
The park opened its Seven Hollows area to rock climbing last year. Officials hope the combination of traditional climbing and the beginner-friendly via ferrata will expand tourism and the state's outdoor economy.
The Arkansas Parks Department worked with the Arkansas Archeological Survey to protect American Indian rock art sites during development of the route.
