A retired firefighter used a garden hose to slow a vehicle fire outside a Farmington home Sunday evening, helping responding crews limit damage to the building's exterior, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded around 6:41 p.m. Aug. 17 to 1144 Meadowbrook Lane, where a fire that began in the engine compartment of a 2008 Buick LaCrosse had spread to the front of the house. The vehicle had been parked in front of an attached garage.
Wade L. Peck, 56, of Farmington, was driving past the property about two minutes after the vehicle began smoking, the Sheriff's Office said. Peck stopped and used a hose attached to the house to keep the fire from growing rapidly until firefighters arrived.
A 20-year-old resident, a juvenile and a dog were inside the home when the fire started. All three occupants and the dog got out safely, deputies said.
The home is owned by Shane and Marianne Walker. Farmington Code Enforcement inspected the property and cleared the family to continue living there.
Firefighters from the Victor and Farmington fire departments responded. The Sheriff's Office and Ontario County fire investigators are continuing to investigate the cause.
