The New York Yankees could not complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, falling 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx. The loss dropped New York to 68-53 after its offense managed just four hits one day after scoring 10 runs.
Max Fried kept the Yankees within striking distance, allowing one run over five innings. Weston Wilson’s solo homer in the second accounted for the only damage against Fried, who surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out four while throwing 88 pitches.
Logan Gilbert was even better for Seattle. The right-hander worked six scoreless innings, limiting New York to four hits while striking out seven and issuing just one walk.
The Yankees had few opportunities to respond and finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. They also struck out 10 times.
New York’s best chance came in the seventh. José Caballero appeared to be caught stealing second with two outs, but Colt Emerson dropped the ball during the tag to keep the inning alive. Amed Rosario then struck out with runners on the corners to end the threat.
Trent Grisham also cost the Yankees a potential scoring opportunity earlier in the game when he popped up while sliding into second, turning what appeared to be a double into an out.
The bullpen kept the game within one, with Ryan Yarbrough, Yerry De los Santos, and Fernando Cruz combining for four scoreless innings.
The Yankees travel to Toronto for a three-game series against the Blue Jays beginning Friday night at 7:15 p.m. Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start against Shane Bieber.
