Seneca Falls resident and Auburn special education teacher Adam Barcia is being honored as one of eight finalists in a New York Islanders fan contest to design the NHL team’s third jersey for the 2027-28 season.
Barcia said his orange jersey concept was selected from more than 80,000 submissions, with the first round of online voting scheduled to end Friday, Aug. 14.
The design draws on Barcia’s childhood on Long Island and a fifth-grade teacher who introduced him to the Islanders. Barcia said the teacher, Mr. Burchard, often wore a bright orange Islanders jersey to school and also inspired him to become an educator.

Barcia now works as a special education teacher for the Auburn Enlarged City School District. He is also a SUNY Cortland graduate.
The Islanders launched the competition in July, asking fans to design the team’s official third jersey. The winning concept will become the team’s alternate jersey for the 2027-28 season.
