Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in political campaigns as New York Democrats seek action against Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman over unlabeled AI-generated campaign ads, according to Spectrum News 1.
Several ads from the gubernatorial candidate feature AI-generated images of Gov. Kathy Hochul without labels required under a new state law.
Syracuse University professor Jennifer Stromer-Galley said increasingly advanced automated accounts can coordinate propaganda, distribute misinformation and create content without continued human direction.
Research cited in the report found people often struggle to distinguish AI-generated material from content created by humans, increasing concerns about election misinformation.
Stromer-Galley said Congress has not passed federal laws regulating AI-generated political advertising or requiring disclaimers for such content.
