The impact of New York’s new data center permit moratorium on TeraWulf’s proposed Lansing project remains unclear, according to The Tompkins Weekly. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s July 14 executive order pauses discretionary permits for certain artificial intelligence data centers for up to one year.
The order directs the state Department of Public Service to prepare an environmental impact statement for data centers.
TeraWulf has proposed redeveloping part of the former Cayuga Power Plant site in Lansing for its Lake Hawkeye project.
The company said the project remains in early planning and any data center operations would occur beyond the executive order’s timeframe.
Local opponents said they welcome the moratorium but want broader rules covering smaller data centers as well.
