Ontario County agencies plan Fourth of July DWI crackdown

Ontario County law enforcement agencies will step up impaired-driving patrols from July 2 through July 5 as part of a statewide Fourth of July STOP-DWI enforcement campaign.

Ontario County STOP-DWI will partner with the Ontario County Sheriff's Department, Finger Lakes Community College Campus Police and the Canandaigua and Geneva police departments during the high-visibility enforcement effort, according to Ontario County Public Health.

The campaign is aimed at reducing impaired-driving crashes, injuries and deaths during the holiday period. Public health officials said Fourth of July celebrations often include family gatherings, food and fireworks, but the holiday is also one of the deadliest of the year because of impaired-driving crashes.

New York State Police, county sheriffs, municipal law enforcement agencies and local STOP-DWI programs are expected to collaborate across the state as part of the effort.

The Fourth of July campaign is one of several statewide high-visibility enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. Other campaigns target the Super Bowl, St. Patrick's Day, 4/20, Memorial Day, the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Ontario County Public Health also encouraged residents to plan for a safe ride home and pointed to the STOP-DWI "Have a Plan" mobile app, which is available at stopdwi.org/mobileapp.
