New York is launching a $10 million, multi-campus SUNY research network focused on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke and other age-related brain disorders.
The SUNY Brain Institute will be led by the University at Buffalo and connect researchers and specialized facilities at Binghamton University, SUNY Downstate, SUNY College of Optometry and SUNY Upstate Medical University.
State officials estimate that 427,000 New Yorkers are living with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, a number expected to rise as the population ages.
Five campuses divide first-phase funding
Buffalo will receive $5 million to coordinate the statewide network and expand research infrastructure focused on age-related brain disorders.
Binghamton will receive $500,000 to build multiscale research capacity for studying dementia with multiple causes. SUNY Downstate will receive $1.5 million to create a Lifespan Neural Dynamics Center.
The SUNY College of Optometry will use $1.5 million to establish an eye biobank for research on neurological and visual disorders. SUNY Upstate will receive $1.5 million for a node that combines biospecimens, induced pluripotent stem cells and organoid models.
The institute was authorized in 2025 through capital funding in the 2025-26 state budget. The first phase is intended to give researchers shared access to equipment, samples and other capabilities that individual campuses may not maintain on their own.
SUNY has more than 600 faculty members working in neuroscience. State officials said the network could help them collaborate across disciplines, compete for outside grants and move discoveries toward clinical use.
The structure is described as federated, meaning participating campuses will retain their own programs while sharing expertise and infrastructure through a common network. Officials said the arrangement is intended to link complementary strengths rather than duplicate the same equipment at each location.
State seeks broader research growth
Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed SUNY to double research serving the public. The brain institute is one of several projects tied to that goal.
Other recent efforts include the Empire AI computing system at Buffalo, an AI research center at Binghamton, a biofabrication and imaging facility at Buffalo, expansion of the RNA Institute at Albany and a quantum research hub at Stony Brook.
SUNY has also created a research leadership academy and an online portal with profiles for nearly 7,000 researchers at 26 campuses. Systemwide research spending totaled nearly $1.5 billion in fiscal 2025.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. said the institute is designed to connect research expertise with public-health needs. The system includes four academic health centers, five hospitals and four medical schools.
More than 95% of New Yorkers live within 30 miles of one of SUNY's 64 colleges and universities. The system serves about 1.7 million students through degree programs, continuing education and community programs.
State officials said improved collaboration could also strengthen training for students and early-career scientists. The institute's participating campuses span western, central and downstate New York.
The state did not announce a completion date for the first phase or specific clinical trials. Officials described the initial investment as infrastructure for long-term, collaborative research.
