Shuttered nuclear plant near NYC returns to debate as state power falters

A closed nuclear plant that once supplied about a quarter of New York City’s electricity is back at the center of the state’s energy debate, according to the Times Union. New York leaders continue to reject calls to restart Indian Point despite growing concerns about energy costs, reliability, and emissions.

The plant’s owner says Indian Point could be restarted in about five years at a cost of roughly $10 billion. Supporters argue the 2021 shutdown forced the state to rely more heavily on natural gas, while opponents cite safety concerns and the plant’s location near millions of residents.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has instead backed construction of new nuclear reactors elsewhere in New York. Meanwhile, analyses cited in the report found most of the clean energy lost when Indian Point closed has been replaced by fossil fuel generation, increasing emissions and contributing to higher energy costs.
