A rare underwater construction project is bringing high-speed internet to island residents in Sodus Bay, according to 13WHAM-TV.
Spectrum crews are drilling beneath the bay floor to connect Eagle Island, LeRoy Island and Crescent Beach with fiber internet service. The effort targets areas where many residents have relied on cellular hotspots because traditional broadband wasn’t available.
The installation marks the final phase of a countywide broadband expansion that will improve connectivity for more than 1,200 homes. Local officials say the project could serve as a model for similar underwater fiber installations elsewhere.
