Waterloo police officers will once again be handing out free Slurpee coupons this summer, but not for breaking the rules.
The Waterloo Police Department has partnered with 7-Eleven for the return of Operation Chill, a nationwide community outreach program that rewards children for positive behavior and good deeds. Through the program, officers can distribute coupons for free small Slurpee drinks to children they observe making good choices or helping others.
Now in its 31st year, Operation Chill is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and young people through positive interactions. This year, 7-Eleven will distribute nearly 740,000 coupons to more than 1,300 participating law enforcement agencies across the country, including the Waterloo Police Department.
Police Chief James Chechak said the program creates opportunities for officers to recognize positive behavior while building trust with local youth. Children may receive coupons for actions such as wearing a bicycle helmet, helping a neighbor, picking up litter, holding a door for someone or demonstrating other examples of good citizenship.
Village Trustee Treasa Bowers said the program helps foster stronger community connections and encourages positive engagement between residents and law enforcement. Since its launch in 1995, Operation Chill has distributed more than 24 million coupons through participating agencies nationwide.
