With Aaron Judge still sidelined, Cody Bellinger delivered the decisive swing Sunday as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-1 at Yankee Stadium. The win helped New York improve to 38-26 while Boston dropped to 27-36, as the Yankees used a five-run eighth inning to break open a tie game.
For much of the afternoon, runs were hard to come by. Cam Schlittler matched Boston starter Ranger Suárez inning for inning early, allowing just one run over 5.2 innings while striking out five. Schlittler carried a shutout into the sixth before an RBI double by Willson Contreras tied the game at 1-1.
The Yankees scratched across their first run in the fifth when José Caballero doubled and scored on a two-out single by Paul Goldschmidt. New York had opportunities to do more damage earlier, including loading the bases in the fourth, but could not capitalize.
Everything changed in the eighth. With two outs and the score still tied, Bellinger crushed a solo home run to right field to put the Yankees ahead for good. The rally continued when Amed Rosario singled, stole second and scored on Trent Grisham’s third hit of the day. Moments later, Jazz Chisholm Jr. erased a frustrating afternoon at the plate by launching a three-run homer that turned a one-run game into a comfortable victory.
The Yankees finished with 10 hits, while the bullpen protected the lead after Schlittler’s strong outing. New York improved to 2-3 since Judge’s injury but received encouraging contributions throughout the lineup.
The Yankees return to action Monday when they open a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Will Warren is expected to start for New York opposite Cleveland right-hander Gavin Williams.
