Driver injured after car strikes culvert on Route 34 in southern Cayuga County

Emergency crews responded to a one-car crash Wednesday morning on Route 34 in southern Cayuga County after a vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert before coming to rest back on the highway.

The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department said the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. between Myers and Bruton roads. Genoa Rescue, the King Ferry Fire Department, and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid were all dispatched to the scene.

First responders said the vehicle had gone off the road, hit a culvert, and ended up upright on the roadway. The driver, who was the lone occupant, remained inside the vehicle but was not trapped.

King Ferry firefighters were released from the scene shortly after arrival, while Southern Cayuga Instant Aid handled patient care and Genoa firefighters managed traffic control.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police took over the investigation. Fire crews cleared the scene and returned to service within about 30 minutes.
