Floodwater tore through a local elementary school and left behind a repair bill nearing seven figures, according to The Ithaca Voice. Officials say Cayuga Heights Elementary School could face more than $1 million in damage after early April rains soaked its lower level.
Leaders in the Ithaca City School District approved up to $1.5 million in emergency funds to cover repairs and secure state reimbursement. Crews must remove damaged walls and floors, then rebuild and address potential mold.
The flooding hit during spring break, so students missed no class time. Still, board members say deeper infrastructure issues—like drainage and aging facilities—may need long-term fixes beyond this costly cleanup.
