New York State Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan announced Friday that he will not seek re-election this fall, citing recent health challenges after nearly six years representing the 131st Assembly District.
Gallahan, a Republican and Conservative from Manchester, said he will complete the remainder of his current term through Dec. 31, emphasizing that his offices will remain open and fully operational through the end of the legislative session.
“I remain committed to working hard every day for the people I represent,” Gallahan said, noting that key work remains, including finalizing the state budget and wrapping up the legislative session in the coming weeks.
Gallahan pointed to what he described as significant accomplishments during his tenure, including securing hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funding for local communities across the sprawling district, which spans portions of Ontario, Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Broome, and Chenango counties.
He also highlighted efforts on public safety policies, increased funding for local roads, support for small businesses, advocacy for family farmers, and work on behalf of veterans.
“After a tremendous amount of prayer and reflection with my wife, Lynn, and our children, Jackie and Corey, I have made the difficult decision not to seek re-election due to recent health challenges,” Gallahan said. “While this was not an easy choice, it is the right one so I can focus on my health while continuing to fulfill my responsibilities to the community.”
Looking ahead, Gallahan announced his support for Mark Benjamin as his preferred successor, though the official nominee will be selected by the Committee to Fill Vacancies.
“I strongly support Mark Benjamin as our next Assemblyman and believe he has the experience, work ethic, and deep understanding of our communities to serve effectively,” Gallahan said.
Gallahan said he plans to remain focused on his duties through the remainder of his term, pledging to continue advocating for the district through the end of 2026.
