More than 2,000 feet beneath Cayuga Lake, crews are mining salt with high-tech tools and a focus on safety, according to The Tompkins Weekly.
Cargill’s Lansing operation supplies a major share of road salt across the Northeast, using remote-controlled machinery and miles of underground conveyor belts. The mine stretches for miles beneath the lake and employs about 160 workers.
Leaders say modern technology and strict oversight have helped improve safety and limit environmental impact. At the same time, the company is working with local schools to recruit younger workers as demand and workforce needs continue to shift.
