Students were stunned to learn their small town once held a WWII prison camp, according to The Times of Wayne County. Newark High School classes explored the area’s hidden wartime history through interactive lessons.
They discovered German POWs lived locally and worked on farms during the war. A 92-year-old historian helped bring those stories to life with firsthand knowledge.
Students also learned about local hero Rear Admiral Leslie Gehres and reacted with surprise at how their community treated prisoners and honored veterans.
